Jean-Marie Appriou d\u00e9veloppe une r\u00e9flexion autour de la sculpture dont il s\u2019approprie les savoir-faire traditionnels pour mieux les d\u00e9tourner et en \u00e9tendre les potentialit\u00e9s. Seul ou avec l\u2019aide d\u2019artisans qualifi\u00e9s, il explore \u2013 ensemble ou s\u00e9par\u00e9ment \u2013 des mat\u00e9riaux comme l\u2019aluminium, le verre, le bronze ou encore la terre cuite dans des processus non conventionnels. De ses exp\u00e9rimentations \u00e0 caract\u00e8re alchimique, \u00e9mergent des figures humaines, animales et v\u00e9g\u00e9tales qui se r\u00e9pondent et se compl\u00e8tent donnant lieu \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents sc\u00e9narios. Cet univers fantastique et merveilleux, parfois inqui\u00e9tant, se nourrit d\u2019inspirations vari\u00e9es, allant de la mythologie \u00e9gyptienne \u00e0 la peinture pr\u00e9rapha\u00e9lite, de la litt\u00e9rature de Science- Fiction au cin\u00e9ma et \u00e0 la bande dessin\u00e9e. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jean-Marie Appriou s\u2019int\u00e9resse ici \u00e0 la figure du flamant rose pour d\u00e9peindre l\u2019id\u00e9e de passage entre les \u00e9l\u00e9ments \u2013 l\u2019air et l\u2019eau \u2013 tels \u00ab des portes de la perception \u00bb. <\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est avec des pattes extr\u00eamement fines et des palmes exag\u00e9r\u00e9ment grandes que l\u2019artiste d\u00e9peint ces animaux, entre fragilit\u00e9 et puissance. Marchant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 mi-pattes dans une soupe primitive, ils observent ce magma de vie dont ils sont les t\u00e9moins privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s. <\/span><\/p>\n

Les flamants repr\u00e9sentent l\u2019incarnation m\u00eame d\u2019une animalit\u00e9 qui traverse les \u00e2ges g\u00e9n\u00e9tiquement \u2013 descendants des dinosaures \u2013 mais aussi les continents, guid\u00e9s par l\u2019attraction magn\u00e9tique des p\u00f4les dans leur qu\u00eate migratoire. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jean-Marie Appriou is developing a reflection on sculpture, appropriating traditional skills to hijack them and extend their potential. Working alone or with skilled craftsmen, he explores – together or separately – materials such as aluminum, glass, bronze and terracotta in unconventional processes. His alchemical experiments produce human, animal and plant figures that respond to and complement each other, giving rise to different scenarios. This fantastic, marvellous and sometimes disturbing universe draws on a variety of inspirations, from Egyptian mythology to Pre-Raphaelite painting, from science fiction literature to cinema and comic strips. <\/em><\/div>\n

Here, Jean-Marie Appriou uses the figure of the pink flamingo to depict the idea of passage between the elements \u2013 air and water \u2013 as \u201cdoors of perception\u201d. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

With extremely thin legs and exaggeratedly large fins, the artist depicts these animals as somewhere between fragile and powerful. Walking half-legged in a primitive soup, they observe the magma of life of which they are privileged witnesses. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The flamingos represent the very embodiment of an animality that crosses genetic ages – descendants of the dinosaurs – but also continents, guided by the magnetic attraction of the poles in their migratory quest. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
