La Fondation CAB Saint-Paul-de-Vence, installée dans un superbe bâtiment des années 50, a pour objectif de poursuivre la mission de la Fondation Cab à Bruxelles dédié à l’art minimal et conceptuel à travers une double programmation : la présentation de la collection de la Fondation et les expositions thématiques et saisonnières. À cela s’ajoute un programme d’artistes en résidence pour la saison hivernale.

La Fondation CAB présente RIchard Long

Après ses études au West of England College of Art de Bristol puis à la Saint Martin’s School of Arts de Londres, Richard Long choisit de faire de la terre entière son lieu de création et d’exposition, de travailler à l’échelle du paysage et au rythme de la marche. Malgré le caractère éphémère de la grande majorité de ses œuvres – in situ, soumises à reconquête par leur environnement et aux dégradations climatiques – son travail a été montré dans de très nombreuses institutions à travers le monde et lors de manifestations internationales.

Devenue une des figures majeures du Land Art, l’artiste se défend pourtant d’être trop assimilé à ce mouvement surtout américain, dans la mesure où il considère ses œuvres plus comme des sculptures personnelles et légères que comme des « monuments ».

Se revendiquant avant tout sculpteur, Richard Long évolue dans un espace quantifiable, qu’il s’agisse de durée ou d’inscriptions laissées sur place. En utilisant des matériaux qu’il récupère dans la nature, et sans se dissocier de son mode de traitement atypique du paysage, l’artiste donne ainsi à son œuvre une « ligne » directrice et parvient à établir un lien entre nature et culture.

The Fondation CAB Saint-Paul-de-Vence, housed in a superb building dating from the 1950s, aims to continue the mission of the Fondation Cab in Brussels, which is dedicated to minimal and conceptual art, through a two-pronged programme: the presentation of the Foundation’s collection and thematic and seasonal exhibitions. This is complemented by a programme of artists in residence for the winter season.

The CAB Foundation presents RIchard Long

After studying at the West of England College of Art in Bristol and then at Saint Martin’s School of Arts in London, Richard Long chose to make the whole earth his place of creation and exhibition, working on the scale of the landscape and the rhythm of walking. Despite the ephemeral nature of the vast majority of his works – in situ, subject to reclamation by their environment and to climatic degradation – his work has been shown in numerous institutions around the world and at international events.

Having become one of the leading figures of Land Art, the artist nevertheless refuses to be overly assimilated to this mainly American movement, insofar as he sees his works more as personal, lightweight sculptures than as ‘monuments’.

Claiming to be above all a sculptor, Richard Long evolves in a quantifiable space, whether it is a question of time or of inscriptions left on the spot. By using materials that he recovers from nature, and without dissociating himself from his atypical treatment of the landscape, the artist gives his work a guiding ‘line’ and succeeds in establishing a link between nature and culture.
