Hodhod, (la huppe) est une sculpture musicale s’activant par le vent et le souffle. C’est une interprétation libre basée sur l’oeuvre Mantiq al-Tayr, Le Cantique des oiseaux, du poète persan Farîd od-dîn’ Attar, emblème du soufisme et fondé sur la sagesse universelle. Cette oeuvre poétique chante le voyage de milliers d’oiseaux en quête de Sîmorgh, figure centrale de la mythologie perse. Il s’agit d’un voyage initiatique, symbolique et spirituel, une quête de vérité et d’identité portée par ces volatiles qui personnifient différents traits humains. Guidés par la Huppe, incarnation de la sagesse, seuls trente oiseaux parviennent à la fin du voyage et se retrouvent face à Sîmorgh qui n’est autre que le reflet d’eux-mêmes… À travers la figure de l’oiseau, animal qui relie la terre au ciel et dont le langage nous est à la fois familier et mystérieux, ce texte est selon Leili Anvar une invitation à se dépasser, en osant expérimenter de nouvelles formes et langages. 

Cette oeuvre a été réalisée dans le cadre de MONDES NOUVEAUX, programme de soutien à la conception et à la réalisation de projets artistiques porté par le Ministère de la Culture, sur un site du Conservatoire du littoral. 

« Dans Le Cantique des oiseaux — oeuvre matrice du poète persan ‘Attâr — qui a inspiré les sculptures-oiseaux de Katia Kameli, les oiseaux représentent les âmes humaines en quête de la vérité. Dans ce long roman en vers persans, le poète, représenté par la huppe, se fait guide spirituel et raconte les tribulations des âmes-oiseaux au cours de leur long voyage. Il évoque l’exil, chante le retour, dit l’indicible et fait voir l’invisible. (…) La huppe, comme le poète, connaît le pouvoir transformant du récit et la puissance alchimique du verbe (…) La huppe (hodhod) donc, devient le guide (hâdi) qui saura mener la troupe des oiseaux à destination. 
Tout au long du Cantique des oiseaux, la huppe sera elle aussi porteuse du souffle narratif. Elle répondra inlassablement aux interrogations, aux doutes et aux excuses des oiseaux en leur racontant des histoires : des contes d’amour et de sagesse, des anecdotes édifiantes ou drôles, des récits venus des quatre coins du monde, le long des routes de la soie ou avec les caravanes d’Arabie. »

Hodhod, (the hoopoe) is a musical sculpture activated by wind and breath. It is a free interpretation based on the work Mantiq al-Tayr, The Conference of the Birds, by the Persian poet Farîd od-dîn’ Attar, an emblem of Sufism and based on universal wisdom. This poetic work sings of the journey of thousands of birds in search of Sîmorgh, a central figure in Persian mythology. It is an initiatory, symbolic, and spiritual journey, a quest for truth and identity carried by these birds which personify different human traits. Guided by the hoopoe, the incarnation of wisdom, only thirty birds reach the end of the journey and find themselves facing Sîmorgh, who is none other than the reflection of themselves… Through the figure of the bird, an animal that connects the earth to the sky and whose language is both familiar and mysterious, this text is, according to Leili Anvar, an invitation to surpass oneself, by daring to experiment with new forms and languages. 

This work was produced as part of MONDES NOUVEAUX, a French program to support the design and production of artistic projects run by the French Ministry of Culture, on a site belonging to the Conservatoire du littoral. 

“In The Conference of the Birds – the masterpiece of the Persian poet ‘Attâr – which inspired Katia Kameli’s bird sculptures, the birds represent human souls in search of truth. In this long novel in Persian verse, the poet, represented by the hoopoe, acts as a spiritual guide, and recounts the tribulations of the bird-souls during their long journey. He evokes the exile, sings of the return, tells the unspeakable and makes the invisible visible. (…) The hoopoe, like the poet, knows the transforming power of storytelling and the alchemical power of the word (…) The hoopoe (hodhod), therefore, becomes the guide (hâdi) who will lead the flock of birds to their destination. 

Throughout the The Conference of the Birds, the hoopoe is also the bearer of the narrative breath. It will tirelessly answer the birds’ questions, doubts, and excuses by telling them stories: tales of love and wisdom, edifying or funny anecdotes, tales from the four corners of the world, along the Silk Roads or with the caravans of Arabia.”
