Depuis le début des années 1990, Diana Thater est une pionnière dans l’utilisation du film, de la vidéo, de la lumière et du son, défiant continuellement les limites des médias basés sur le temps et de l’art de l’installation. Son travail explore la relation entre le monde naturel et le monde construit par l’homme, tout en examinant de manière critique les structures de la réalité médiatisée. S’inspirant d’une grande variété de sources, dont la littérature, les sciences du comportement animal, les mathématiques, les échecs et la sociologie, ses œuvres provocantes s’engagent directement dans leur environnement, produisant une relation complexe entre le temps et l’espace. En combinant les qualités temporelles de la vidéo et la dimension architecturale de son installation physique, le travail de Thater explore l’artifice de sa propre production et sa capacité à construire la perception et à façonner la façon dont nous pensons le monde à travers son image.
Outre les murs vidéo et d’autres pratiques innovantes d’installation vidéo, Thater a innové dans l’art de l’installation vidéo à 360 degrés avec ses œuvres révolutionnaires : China (1995), relay (une collaboration avec T. Kelly Mason, 2007), Chernobyl (2012) et, plus récemment, Yes there will be singing, une œuvre sonore, vidéo et lumineuse qui a été installée pour la première fois en 2020 par l’artiste dans un lieu isolé et qui ne pouvait être expérimentée que numériquement, via un flux vidéo multi channel livestream.

Since the early 1990s, Diana Thater has pioneered the use of film, video, light and sound, continually challenging the boundaries of time-based media and installation art. Her work explores the relationship between the natural and man-made worlds, while critically examining the structures of mediated reality. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, including literature, animal behavioural science, mathematics, chess and sociology, his provocative works engage directly with their environment, producing a complex relationship between time and space. Combining the temporal qualities of video with the architectural dimension of his physical installation, Thater’s work explores the artifice of his own production and its ability to construct perception and shape the way we think about the world through its image.
In addition to video walls and other innovative video installation practices, Thater has pioneered the art of 360-degree video installation with his groundbreaking works China (1995), relay (a collaboration with T. Kelly Mason, 2007), Chernobyl (2012) and, most recently, Yes there will be singing, a sound, video and light work that was first installed in 2020 by the artist in a remote location and could only be experienced digitally, via a multi-channel livestream video stream.
